#POETRYMONTH: My Persephone by Andrea Koehle Jones

My Persephone

Poem turned into lyrics by Canadian lyricist Andrea Koehle Jones (SOCAN)

You say
you’re here to stay
you say this time
you’ll fight it.
But I know leaves fall
and you’ll fall
down beside them.
Falling down,
underground,
into the deepest blue
I know
– you don’t want to go
but seasons seem to take you….
[chorus]
Each year
always the same
Sweet Persephone,
lost again.
And brilliant days come alive,
with you,
around
but the things we do,
the things we don’t
they just cut you
down…
Falling down,
underground,
into the deepest blue
I know
reaching up, reaching out
but still we take you…
[chorus]
So resigned,
like a tree
Sweet Persephone
lost again
lost again.
Why can’t you fight
for me
for us
‘cause I know
what we could lose
will lose
with-out you
Each year
always the same
My Sweet Persephone,
lost again
lost again.
